Q&A With… Brandon Scott, Fashion Designer

B:SCOTT has been a long time in the making. Designer Brandon Scott began his career at San Francisco State University, winning the award for “Most Marketable Designer” in his senior year. This led to an internship with Nice Collective in San Francisco. Having proven his talent to the designers of Nice Collective, they gave Brandon Scott his first job out of college as their design assistant.

For the next year, Brandon learned anything and everything from the creative geniuses behind Nice Collective. In 2005, he received an offer to launch an innovative men’s line, to be called B.Son, from a well established women’s clothing company, Rebecca Beeson. His role was head of design, production and sales, overseeing all aspects of the collection. This positioned him to have a better understanding of how to design a collection, insure great quality, and sell to the best stores. In 2007, B.Son won Sportswear International’s Best New Designer of the Year.

In 2009, Brandon Scott launched his own company. B:SCOTT embodies the fusion of Japanese and German aesthetics — not over designing, but rather using lines with a purpose. Architecture is a major inspiration behind this, as Brandon Scott’s grandfather, having been trained at the Bauhaus in the 1930′s, became a prominent designer and contractor with projects to his name throughout the U.S.

TDR: What time of day are you most creative, and why?

BS:It really depends, but it’s usually right after I have my coffee in the morning. But I also like to design at night when I have nothing else to think about. It has less to do with time of day and more about when I’m inspired. But I’m really the most creative during the day with no distractions.

TDR: Describe your workspace. Cluttered/clean?

BS: Hahaha! I’m really anal when it comes to cleaning. I can’t even start work unless my office or house is completely clean. It’s annoying, but necessary for me to work. I usually design at my house because there is more light and is a lot more comfortable than my office. I live in Silverlake, L.A., and have a decent view of the city so it helps to calm me down. My office is a two-story store front with our offices downstairs in downtown Los Angeles. Upstairs is our store front and downstairs is basically a big cement loft with no windows. But the downstairs is great because there are no distractions with people walking by and such.

TDR: What inspires you most in life?

BS: To be honest I am most inspired when I am depressed or really struggling in life. Why, because that feeling of depression motivates me to work harder and improve on my failures. Everyday I’m thankful to be where I’m at. I’ve had to work incredibly hard to get where I am today and had a number of horrible things to overcome. But, I always think in the back of my mind about how there are so many people that struggle with life a lot more than I do, which inspires me to be thankful and press forward.

TDR: What does ‘beauty’ mean to you?

BS: I’m more into imperfections than perfection. The qualities that most would consider bad to have are the qualities that are most beautiful to me. I hate perfect things. I’m more into ugly things than I am into what most people would consider beautiful.

TDR: Are there any concepts or ideas which you would like to re-explore?

BS: As a kid I always would sketch car concepts. I have always wanted to design cars. I really feel that in the car market there is so much of the same thing. You can only get uniqueness if you have money when dealing with cars. And that’s what I hate about it. That or you buy vintage and put work into it. And to be honest, I hate what cars look like right now. It’s really cookie cutter…

TDR: For a young artist who wishes to make a living fulfilling their dream – what advice would you give?

BS:Simple, NEVER GIVE UP!!! NEVER!!!

TDR: Do you have a hero?

BS: My parents have been the biggest motivation for me. For the most part, they have always steered me in the right direction and have helped me get the courage to trust my instincts in life. Not to be cheesy, but it takes a lot of courage and will power to be great parents, that’s why their my hero’s.

TDR: Where is your favorite place in the world?

BS: I would say I haven’t found my favorite place in the world yet. I like certain things about certain places. I like L.A. for the weather and my friends. I like Tokyo for its fashion and etiquette. I like New York for its drive and seriousness. And San Francisco for its landscape.

TDR: Finally, what can you tell us about your upcoming line?

BS: Well, I’m really pushing it for Spring ’11. I am launching women’s and a bag collection. As for what will be in stores this Fall ’10, I have really stepped up my outerwear and added a lot of new fabrics. I really am trying to make a more dynamic collection each and every season.
